Scuba mask
Knowing how to empty your scuba mask of water while diving is not only
important, it could be a life-saving technique. If water gets into your
mask, your visibility decreases greatly. This skill is required for
certification.
The following few paragraphs will discuss some of the scuba mask emptying
techniques all divers must master before becoming certified. It will
take some practice, but the techniques can be mastered.
• Completely submerse yourself in the water – For best
practice, get as low in the pool or ocean as you can so that you can
better simulate a real-life deep water experience.
• Pull mask away from your face – You will need a little
bit of room to work, but do not pull it so far out that the strap breaks.
• Allow the water to flood your mask – If you are practicing,
you should not be afraid of doing this. Perhaps it may be best to start
out doing this close to the water level and then go deeper as you get
more proficient.
• Do not panic – Easier said than done, but if you practice
enough, the sensation of the water in your scuba mask will not be shocking
or new to you. You will be prepared.
• Keep breathing – just because your mask is flooded does
not mean your snorkel and regulator cease to work. Continue to take
calm breaths throughout the process.
• Tilt your head – This is the first step in the emptying
process. Tilt your head just a little bit. There is no need for a big
tilt.
• Press the mask – With one hand, press the mask tight against
your forehead. Once you practice enough, you should be able to do this
easily.
• Remember to breathe –The best way to remain calm is to
breathe regularly and calmly.
• Exhale – You must firmly but gently exhale the air through
your nose. Doing this will force out the water that has gathered inside.
• Replace the mask – After the water has been blown out,
quickly but carefully move the mask back into place.
If you follow each step with precision, emptying your scuba mask will
become second-nature.
